The challenge
Grand Catering has always been very much engaged with climate issues and nature conservation. For example, they usually use local products, grown according to the season, and where possible grown without the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides. They also make every effort to minimise their energy consumption. However there were still some CO2 emissions that they could not, at present, prevent. What could we do about it?
Our contribution
We suggested offsetting the unavoidable emissions by investing in sustainable energy projects in developing countries. Such an investment leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions somewhere else in the world, equal to the volume of unavoidable emissions here. The net effect is that no extra greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere. The beauty of these sustainable energy projects is that they also have many extra advantages for the local population and region, such as knowledge transfer, employment opportunities, better health and stimulating the local economy.
The result
Grand Catering is now assured that it is doing everything possible to have no negative effect on the climate and the natural environment. They can use this fact to give themselves an even more distinctive profile in their market.
A word from Grand Catering
“We use mainly local products, grown with respect for the seasons and, where possible, without the use of chemical herbicides and pesticides. We have lowered our energy consumption (for example through using different cooking methods, cooling systems, and green power generators), we minimise water consumption, and achieve logistic efficiency with one central kitchen and by minimising transport movements. We offset the remaining emissions through Climate Neutral Group’s sustainable energy projects. By these means, we differentiate ourselves in our industry and contribute to a sustainable world.”
