The challenge
The ANWB, the Dutch Automobile Association, is a large and complex organisation, in part because of its many subsidiaries. They wanted to map the CO2 emissions of the whole organisation, that is, for all business units and from every source of CO2 emissions. What data should they gather, how should they go about collecting and analysing it, and what reports would give useable insights regarding the organisation’s CO2 emissions?
Our contribution
Climate Neutral Group advised and assisted the ANWB in collecting the various data from each business unit. The data collection was set up from the beginning so as to make it easy to repeat each year in the future. We analysed the collected data from all the units and incorporated it in a CO2 footprint. This is a clear overview in which the analysed data is shown in a simple way that conforms with the Green House Gas protocol, the GRI Directives, and other standards. We also advised the ANWB on how this information could be used in an annual report, for example, and how any estimates and assumptions involved should be documented.
The result
The ANWB now has a CO2 footprint for each business unit so that it can see how much CO2 is emitted by each unit and what the emission sources are. One clear finding was that paper use is one of the largest sources of emissions, throughout the ANWB. Knowing this, they have been able to take concrete measures.
A word from the ANWB
“Climate Neutral Group has calculated our CO2 footprint and helped with the structural collection of reliable data for compiling this footprint for the whole organisation. The result is a clear report that gives us a starting point for our further reduction policy.”
