Biogasproject in Cambodia for CO2-reduction and local development
The Hague – Since September 21st, Hivos and Climate Neutral Group have joined forces. Together they will strive to realise their mutual objective of climate-neutral operation of as many organisations as possible. This is achieved by reducing emissions as much as possible and offsetting the remaining emissions through high quality sustainable energy projects.
Combining our qualities
Hivos has decades of experience in developing countries, amongst others in the area of sustainable energy projects. These projects bring local communities development as they get access to sustainable energy together with additional benefits. For over ten years Climate Neutral Group has guided a variety of organisations towards climate-neutral operations. Firstly all CO2 emissions are reduced as much as possible, the remaining CO2 emissions are offset by investing in sustainable energy projects. The latter can now also be done via the Hivos/SNV biogas project in Cambodia.
“Two worlds have come together,” said Manuela Monteiro, CEO of Hivos. “In order to approach the corporate market, we have chosen to establish a partnership with Climate Neutral Group, expert and market leader in this area. Everyone wins. ”
“Now Climate Neutral Group has access to the excellent sustainable energy projects of Hivos. These projects meet the highest international quality standards as well as they make a significant contribution to the local inhabitants and region. This partnership is a logical step for the both of us,” said René Toet, CEO of Climate Neutral Group.Cambodia Biogas Project
The biogas project in Cambodia has been developed under the Gold Standard. This Standard ensures that the project complies with the highest international quality standards and at the same time makes a significant contribution to the local inhabitants and region. In this project household scale bio-digesters have been developed. The bio-digesters provide clean cooking fuel for Cambodian families, gas for lighting, eliminates smoke from the kitchen, reduces health problems and produces fertile organic slurry used in agriculture. The digesters save costs on fuel and reduce the workload in collecting firewood. Furthermore, biogas replaces ever scarcer traditional wood fuel and reduces deforestation. As a result, the use of biogas reduces greenhouse gas emissions and the local inhabitants and region benefit from all the additional advantages of this project.
In the future also other sustainable energy projects of Hivos will be offered via Climate Neutral Group.
